Who Am I?
I am a spirit housed by a body for a precious amount of time. I am my ancestors—their joy and their pain. I am Mexican and American [sourced from the world’s finest Scottish, Dutch, Spanish, and French Colonizers). I use [Chavez] in my name to honor the Women in my family (my grandmother, and great-grandmother) who carried that name. They cooked, sewed, and hustled to propel the next generation toward the bounty of opportunity that sat just on the other side of the US/Mexico border. I am a woman. I am a feminist. I am a wife. I am a primary caretaker. I am a Queer-Affriming Christian/ Unitarian. I’ve lived with Thyroid dysfunction since I was a teenager, and I was diagnosed with ADHD at the age of 41. Learning more about how this shows up in my life gave me as much relief as it gave me frustration.
In a culture that secures power by constructing hierarchies that disproportionately harm humans based on race, religion, class, ideology, and ability—there are not many spaces that were created with someone like me in mind. There are not many spaces that were created with MANY folks in mind. So I’m carving out space and inviting anyone who needs space to join me and/or do the same. Let’s take up some space, sinvergüenza.
